Fundraising

Any non-profit organization is faced with funding challenges. Many can rely on grants, but others have to turn to their members in order to raise funds. The League of Women Voters in Butte County has been extremely fortunate in our efforts to raise money to support our initiatives. For the last 4 decades we have held an annual Wine Tasting and Light Buffet. This single event generates enough revenue to fund our organization's mission in the areas of Voter Service and Advocacy.

Each spring the Butte County community turns out in droves to support the League through this elegant event. Held this year at Manzanita Place (Elks Club), we usually draw a crowd of over 500. Local, national, and international wines are featured. Many people come for the wonderful food as well. Our menu features dishes that have become synonymous with our League chapter - dolmas, deviled eggs, and Tiropetes - along with tangy stuffed mushroom, garlic shrimp, and a variety of imported cheeses, fruit, and other gourmet appetizers.

Nearly all League members participate in the event. In addition to selling four (or more!) tickets, members prepare a recipe, line up advertisers, hang posters, and help at the event. There's a role for all our local members. Of course, members also get time to relax and enjoy the wine tasting. The public generally starts lining up at the door a half-hour before the doors open and stay to hear if they have won the incredible wine barrel raffle, full of representative wines, beers, and olive oils from our vendors. The League of Women Voter's Wine Tasting Fundraiser has definitely gained a reputation of being a delightful and elegant community event in support of a worthwhile cause.
